World-renowned British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has expressed admiration for Ghana during a courtesy visit to President Mahama in Accra.
The visit, which took place at the presidency on Monday, June 16, 2025, included sports minister Kofi Adams, former world champion Azumah Nelson, boxing enthusiast Sharaf Mahama, and former British welterweight champion Amir Khan amongst others.
Joshua expressed his utmost delight with Ghana upon arriving here last Friday June 13, 2025.
“I’m really impressed with your beautiful country, amazing culture, hospitality, the airport, organization and I can’t wait to go back and tell the world how beautiful this place is”, Joshua said.
Joshua also called for investment into sports in Ghana and Africa in general, as there are things which can connect the African sports to the world
“I have been calling friends; speaking about ways that we can bring investments into Ghana, we can bring investments into Africa. I understand there are certain things that we can bring from sports and our connections across the world and how we can connect Africa to the rest of the world from sports”, said Joshua.
He further underscored the importance of exploring and maximizing the full business side of sports, as he acknowledged that sports is short lived.
While meeting with President Mahama, Joshua received the honour of being named “Ambassador for Boxing in Africa.” In order to motivate young people and advance the sport throughout the continent, President Mahama underlined the significance of role models like Joshua.
Joshua’s involvement in the “Battle of the Beasts” boxing match at the renowned Bukom Boxing Arena was the highlight of his trip to Ghana. The event, which was organised by Legacy Rise Sports and led by CEO Sharaf Mahama, son of Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, drew boxing fans from all over the country.
Joshua’s presence gave the event a more global feel, and his encounters with supporters and other boxers—including boxing greats like Azumah Nelson and Amir Khan—emphasized his sincere love for the sport and its cultural importance in Ghana.
Joshua has 28 wins and four losses in his career which includes winning gold at the 2012 Olympics. He is expected to fight either Moses Itauma, Jared Anderson or Deontay Wilder in his next fight.
