Ablekuma North collation: Police playing funny games with us – NPP

The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the Ghana Police Service of deliberate inaction that is preventing the Electoral Commission (EC) from concluding the collation of results in the disputed Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra region.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Kodua claimed that only three polling stations remain to be collated, but the process has stalled due to the failure of the Police to provide the needed security.

“It’s left with just three polling stations for the EC to finish collating all the results and declare the winner for Ablekuma North,” he said.

According to him, every time the Electoral Commission attempts to invite political parties to discuss the process, certain individuals gather at the EC office to cause disturbances.

“Anytime the EC calls the parties for discussions, some bad elements mass up at the EC office and try to cause mayhem,” he noted.

He said that, in anticipation of this, the EC wrote to the Police Service to request protection, but the Police keep “going back and forth” with excuses.

“The EC wrote to the police for protection, but the Police are giving different stories,” he claimed.

Mr Kodua revealed that the NPP wrote to the Police on June 3, seeking clarity on the security arrangements needed to carry out the collation as directed by the High Court.

He stressed that the people of Ablekuma North urgently need a Member of Parliament.

“We need to complete this process. Ablekuma North needs an MP as soon as possible,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the Police responded to the NPP’s letter, indicating they were waiting for legal advice from the Attorney General before acting.

But Mr Kodua questioned the delay, alleging bias on the part of the security agency.

“To me, the Police are only doing the bidding of the NDC,” he alleged.

He added that in the coming weeks, the party will make public the legal steps they have taken to ensure the collation is completed.

“We’ll make public the legal steps we’ve taken. We are confident we won the elections,” he stressed.

The EC was earlier ordered by the High Court to complete the collation exercise in the constituency.

The NPP insists there is no legal impediment preventing the collation and is calling on the Police to act immediately to allow the EC to carry out its mandate.
