Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested the proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex at Meduma for allegedly preventing two students from writing their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Mathematics paper over unpaid fees.

The arrest was made on Monday, June 17, following a formal complaint lodged by the Kwabre East Municipal Education Director, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, and the Public Relations Officer of the Education Directorate, Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane.

According to a police press release dated Wednesday, June 18, and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, the suspect, Mr. Afoakwa Sarpong, is being investigated for “assault by imprisonment.”

The incident occurred on Monday, June 16, during the Mathematics paper of the just-ended nationwide exams.

Mr. Sarpong is alleged to have locked the two candidates—both final-year Junior High School pupils—in a separate room at the examination centre, citing non-payment of registration fees as justification.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect confined the two candidates in a separate room at the examination centre and released them only after the examination had concluded,” the statement revealed.

DSP Ahianyo further stated that the Mamponteng District Police Command has taken over the matter and has begun formal investigations.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sarpong remains in police custody as investigations continue.
