Over 60 NPP MPs back flagbearer my bid — Bawumia hails ‘strong show of support’

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed appreciation to the over 60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have declared their support for his bid in the party’s upcoming flagbearer elections.

According to him, securing the backing of more than 60 out of the NPP’s 88 MPs in the current ninth Parliament is a clear indication of strong support for his ambition to lead the party.

Speaking to journalists after a courtesy call on him at his office on Thursday, June 19, Dr. Bawumia said the support from lawmakers would play a vital role in his campaign.

“A visit from our Members of Parliament—I think it was a very happy visit and a call to declare support for me. I’m so happy with the group that has declared support for me. We have 88 MPs, and this shows that a significant number have thrown their weight behind me,” he said.

“I believe this is going to be very important, because MPs, as you know, control the constituencies to a large extent. I’m very grateful for what they’ve done today. It’s a strong show of support, and I thank them—and I thank God for it.”

Dr. Bawumia also emphasized the need for hard work to advance both the party’s interests and the country’s development.

The NPP’s National Executive Council has set January 31, 2026, for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Aside from Dr. Bawumia and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, other likely contenders include former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
