NPP should’ve been registering new members, not holding elections if they are serious — Obiri Boahen

A former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has criticised the party’s current approach to rebuilding after its historic defeat in the 2024 general elections.

According to him, the NPP should have prioritised registering new members and issuing party cards instead of rushing into internal elections.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based news portal, GhanaWeb, the outspoken party stalwart said the party’s failure to undertake a serious membership mobilisation drive is a clear indication that key actors have not learnt any lessons from their fall into opposition.

“Are you sure they have learnt lessons? Because if they had, they would have started vigorously campaigning for the registration of members and issuance of party cards,” he said.

He added that many individuals appear more focused on winning internal positions than addressing the party’s structural challenges.

“That is the majority of it. But when people are not vigorously campaigning, when people are not joining me to mount a massive campaign, and people are thinking about ‘oh, incoming national chairman, incoming general secretary, incoming national organiser,’ then it clearly shows that those individuals are not serious,” Obiri Boahen stated.

He questioned the legitimacy of internal elections when, according to him, the party lacks a credible register.

“Are you serious? So, as incoming, who is going to vote for you? What register are you going to use? What album are you going to use?” he asked.

Meanwhile, the NPP’s National Executive Council has set January 31, 2026, for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Apart from former flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, other likely contenders include former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
