Akuapim North MP, Sammi Awuku, has thrown his full support behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the ideal leader to steer the New Patriotic Party (NPP) back to power in the 2028 general elections.
During an appearance on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 19, Awuku lauded the former Vice President’s leadership through some of Ghana’s most challenging times, especially during the global pandemic and its aftermath.
“I believe Dr. Bawumia presents us with a very good opportunity to win 2028,” Awuku affirmed. “Some of us are of the unshaken belief that the difficulties we faced as a government over the last four years — the post-COVID era, economies around the world in turmoil, the global shocks and all — Dr. Bawumia did a good job.”
Awuku pointed to Bawumia’s performance under pressure as evidence of his strength, praising not only his contributions but also his values and demeanor.
“He stood in the gap for the NPP, and I believe in his personal achievement and records, his character, and the strength of his character, and the integrity that he also has,” he said.
The MP’s remarks come amid intensifying internal debate as the NPP prepares for its January 2026 presidential primaries. Awuku’s backing adds momentum to Dr. Bawumia’s growing base of support within the party, as the NPP positions itself for a comeback after its 2024 electoral defeat.
