The NPP will never close ranks in unity until the flagbearer election is over – Nana Akomea

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has welcomed the decision by the National Council to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

According to him, the development is in the best interest of the party.

“The decision by the NPP National Council by overwhelming majority to hold the flagbearer elections first, and quickly, is just what the NPP needs at this time,” he posted on Facebook on June 19.

Nana Akomea who belongs to the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia camp explained that, “The party will never close ranks in unity until the flagbearer election is over. That is fact.”

He further noted “In the past few months in opposition, the dominant news about the party have been about the flagbearership. Either some aspirant is stoking up religious bias, or setting up some exploratory committee etc etc, Even the normal ‘Thank You tour’ was nearly disrupted over flagbearer rivalry.

The former Information Minister cited the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Chairman Wontumi, as another instance.

“Even bail for a detained regional chairman was believed to have been influenced by flagbearer rivalry. This flagbearer rivalry would divide the ranks of the party from polling station elections right up to the national executive elections.

“For a party in the current situation of the NPP, that needs to close ranks and rebuild quickly, we cannot afford another two years of acrimony, accusations, counter accusations, insults, and backbiting and division that attend flagbearer campaigns and elections. Let’s get it over quickly to bring leadership, stability and focus, in not only our other elections, but most importantly to present an alternative to the NDC. Bravo to our National Council,” Nana Akomea wrote.
