Reclaiming Our Roots: A Call for Unity, Reflection, and Purpose in the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Introduction: The New Patriotic Party (NPP), once the beacon of unity, vision, and transformation in Ghanaian politics, is currently at a crossroads. As we approach the 2028 general elections, internal discord, public infighting, and political apathy threaten to dismantle the very foundations of the party. The hope of “breaking the 8” has dimmed in the face of selfish ambition, lack of discipline, and chronic factionalism. This article is a heartfelt and urgent call for members of the NPP to reflect deeply on the values that brought us together and to reignite the spirit of collective responsibility, integrity, and sacrifice.

Historical Legacy and Ideological Strength: The NPP was not built on insults, personal attacks, or political betrayal. It was built on the principles of democracy, rule of law, free-market economy, and individual liberty. Our political ancestry runs deep with figures who made personal sacrifices to ensure Ghana’s progress. From Danquah to Busia, from Adu-Boahen to Kufuor, the foundation was laid not through verbal warfare but through intellectual honesty and national commitment. We must ask ourselves: Are we upholding that legacy, or are we tarnishing it with our present behavior?

The Current State of Affairs: Today, the party finds itself in disarray. High-ranking members openly insult one another on social media. Youth wings have become breeding grounds for propaganda instead of intellectual debate. Party meetings are marred by walkouts and violence. The dignity of NPP is bleeding. We must confront this truth head-on: If we continue this path of disunity, the electorate will punish us severely in 2028. We risk not only losing power but also our political relevance and the trust of the Ghanaian people; legacy of our forebearers and the trust Ghanaians placed in us.

The Wounds We Inflict on Ourselves: When NPP members publicly insult one another, we do not just create a spectacle for our opponents to exploit; we weaken the very foundation of trust and discipline that sustains any great political movement. A house divided against itself cannot stand. The disintegration we are witnessing is not due to external enemies but the internal corrosion of mutual respect, humility, and a shared vision.

It is time we call a spade a spade. We have failed each other. We have allowed ego, personal ambition, and bitterness to override the principles of servant leadership, unity, and patriotism. When party elders are mocked, when young leaders disrespect tradition, and when loyalty is replaced by opportunism, we create an environment unfit for growth or progress.

The Dangers of Division: Disunity in a political party leads to strategic paralysis. When members prioritize their egos over the collective vision, policy implementation suffers. Infighting weakens our ability to hold the opposition accountable. The focus shifts from national development to personal battles. Worse, our young followers, who look up to us, are being socialized into a culture of insult, sabotage, and cynicism. This must stop. We must show leadership and maturity.

Moral Remorse and Political Reflection: It is time for each and every NPP member, from the rank and file to the upper echelons, to look in the mirror. Have we been fair? Have we been just? Have we been loyal to the party or only to our ambitions? Let us be honest: many of the wounds within the party are self-inflicted. We have lost our sense of brotherhood. We speak more to our differences than our shared destiny. Real strength lies not in shouting the loudest, but in listening, in forgiving, and in healing.

Rebuilding Trust and Loyalty: To rebuild, we must start with trust. Trust is earned when leaders are transparent, accountable, and accessible. We need sincere apologies, reconciliatory dialogues, and a return to party discipline. Elders must rise above their factions and speak truth to power. Youth must be guided with wisdom, not weaponized for internal battles. Loyalty to the party must supersede loyalty to individuals. We must remember: we are stronger together than we are apart.

Reuniting Under a Common Vision: Our 2028 campaign cannot be a campaign of confusion. It must be a campaign of clarity and unity. We need a common vision rooted in policies that touch the lives of ordinary Ghanaians. The party’s manifesto must be shaped not by echo chambers, but by evidence and research. Let us come together at regional and national conferences not just to elect leaders, but to renew our purpose and pledge to Ghana’s future. Unity is not a luxury; it is our only chance at victory.

What Members Must Do Going Forward: Each NPP member must take responsibility. Let us stop the public insults. Let us hold constructive internal debates. Let us respect the structures of the party and the mandate of elected officers. Let us make room for dissenting views and find consensus. Whether you are a party foot soldier, youth activist, MP, or national officer, you have a role to play. Our party’s healing starts with your action, your word, your decision to stop fueling division.

A Message to Leadership: This is a direct appeal to our current leadership: Lead with courage, not convenience. Unite with sincerity, not superficial slogans. Be bold enough to discipline where necessary, but also be gracious enough to forgive. The grassroots are watching. Ghanaians are watching. History will remember how you responded in this time of internal crisis. Reconciliation is not a sign of weakness. It is a mark of strength. Call a national unity retreat. Let us heal our wounds before we begin our campaign.

To the Youth: You are the future of this party. Use your voice not to attack but to advocate. Do not inherit a legacy of division. Build one of courage, vision, and respect.

Victory in 2028 Begins Today: The NPP must rise from the ashes of internal discord and stand once again as the beacon of responsible governance. But this cannot happen until we learn to walk together again as brothers and sisters. Let us lay down our swords and pick up the banner of unity. The time for blame is over. The time to build has come.

Let us not let history record that we lost 2028 not because of the strength of our opponents but because of the weakness within. Let unity begin today. For the party. For the people. For Ghana.

Conclusion: Our Future Depends on Us The New Patriotic Party is bigger than any one person. We owe it to our founding fathers, to the millions who have voted for us, and to the unborn generation to do better. Let us stop tearing each other apart. Let us rise above our pettiness. Let us choose unity over division, peace over provocation, and purpose over politics. The 2028 election is ours to lose, or to win, depending on what we do today.

Let us reclaim our roots. Let us remember who we are. Let us walk together again as a united force, ready to serve, ready to lead, and ready to win.
