“I’m so angry at myself” – Nicolas Jackson apologises after red card in Chelsea’s defeat to Flamengo

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has issued a heartfelt apology following his straight red card in Friday’s 3–1 Group D loss to Flamengo in the Club World Cup, played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Substituted on in the 64th minute, Jackson was dismissed just four minutes later for a studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas, leaving Chelsea with ten men and significantly hampering their chances.

“I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card and honestly, I’m so angry at myself.

“I work hard every day… I still don’t fully understand how it happened… one thing is clear: it wasn’t intentional… No excuses. I take full responsibility. I’ll reflect so I’ll grow, and I’ll come back stronger for the badge and also for everyone who believes in me. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.”

This marks his second red card in just over a month (having received the first against Newcastle), prompting heat from supporters and critics alike, including former Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel, who harshly lambasted the decision as a “stupid, stupid, stupid mistake”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca described Jackson’s actions as “a bad moment” but could not confirm whether it was as severe as the Newcastle incident, adding that Jackson “will be out for a while” due to suspension.

Flamengo’s comeback left Chelsea in a precarious position in Group D, making Jackson’s leadership and response even more crucial in their next match against Espérance de Tunis, where he won’t be available.
