A 45-year-old woman has reportedly lost her life after drowning in an abandoned galamsey pit at Anyaaso in the Bosomefreho District of the Ashanti Region.

According to adomonline.com report on June 20, 2025, the incident is believed to have occurred four days before the body was discovered in a decomposed state, partially submerged in mud.

The discovery has since caused widespread fear and distress among residents and commuters, many of whom are now calling on authorities to take immediate action to secure abandoned mining sites in the area.

The body was retrieved and buried due to its advanced state of decomposition.

Residents have established that the growing number of unsecured galamsey pits poses a serious threat to lives and have demanded a swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

They have also urged the government and local authorities to implement safety measures to prevent further tragedies.

“This is not the first time we’re seeing such a thing. These abandoned pits have become death traps. Something must be done”, one resident said.

The incident adds to the ongoing concerns about the environmental and safety hazards associated with illegal mining across parts of Ghana.
