The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that an old storey building collapsed on Saturday morning, June 21, following torrential rains in the Cape Coast Metropolis, killing two elderly men and injuring another.

In a statement issued after the incident, the police indicated that the building, made of bricks and located adjacent to the “London Bridge” at Ashanti Road in Cape Coast, gave way around 8:00 am as heavy downpour battered the area.

Three people were trapped under the rubble.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service, NADMO, the Ambulance Service, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, and police rushed to the scene to begin rescue efforts.

The assembly provided earth-moving machines to help clear the debris.

One of the victims, 21-year-old Frederick Kwesi Yeboah, was pulled out alive and rushed to the hospital.

However, the other two, 79-year-old Ataa Panin and 84-year-old Emmanuel Ankaful, were found unresponsive and later confirmed dead at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Police say the rescue operation ended around 1:50 pm and investigations are ongoing to determine the full cause of the collapse.
