Over 200 former MMDCEs meet Bawumia

Over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are meeting with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia today at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, in what is widely viewed as a major step toward launching his second bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.

The gathering, described by party insiders as a significant show of strength, brings together former local government appointees who served under the NPP’s previous administration and who remain influential figures within the party’s grassroots structures.

While Dr. Bawumia has not officially declared his candidacy, his recent engagements suggest a clear intent to stage a political comeback. Just days ago, he hosted several sitting NPP Members of Parliament at his campaign office, where they expressed strong support for his anticipated return to the leadership race.

Today’s meeting with the former MMDCEs is expected to deepen that momentum, reinforcing the former Vice President’s base within the party ahead of what is likely to be a fiercely contested internal primary.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, the agenda includes party rebuilding efforts, an assessment of the NPP’s performance in the 2024 elections, and strategies to reconnect with the grassroots and broaden electoral appeal.

Political analysts say the back-to-back meetings signal Dr. Bawumia’s determination to maintain his presence and relevance within the party and position himself as the frontrunner in the race to reclaim power in 2028.

The former Vice President led the NPP into the 2024 elections, but the party lost to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who secured a return to the presidency. With today’s high-level engagement, Dr. Bawumia is making it clear that his sights are firmly set on a comeback.
