Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to lead the New Patriotic Party as flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election has received a major boost with former metropolitan, municipal and district chief executive officers of the party declaring their support for him.

Dr Bawumia held an open interaction with MMDCEs in Accra on Monday, June 23, 2025 as part of his stakeholder consultations and about 220 MMDCE reposed their confidence in him to lead the NPP into the 2028 election.

“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.”

“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as Constituency and Regional Executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” the MMDCEs established in a statement to the press.

The MMDCEs described Dr Bawumia as “a man of proven track record in Public Service” and a man whose appeal “cuts across demographics”.

“As Vice President, Dr. Bawumia spearheaded transformative policies such as the digitalisation drive (Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, Paperless Ports), which have enhanced efficiency and formalised Ghana’s economy. His analytical, data-driven approach to governance ensures that policies are evidence-based and impactful, a critical need for Ghana’s next phase of development.”

They added that Dr Bawumia is a “unifier and a grassroots mobilise”.

“Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated an inclusive leadership style, engaging all factions of the party and fostering unity. He has proven this trait severally in his approach within the party. His accessibility and humility resonate deeply with grassroots supporters, making him the ideal leader to galvanise the NPP’s base.”

Last week, majority of the 88 NPP Members of Parliament, numbering about 65, also declared their support for Dr Bawumia.

Fellow Ghanaians, esteemed members of the media, and dedicated supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

We have invited you here today to meet the forum of former MMDCEs for Bawumia. We are a forum of of 220 MMDCEs who served between 2017 and 2024 during the tenure of the immediate past NPP administration

We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana.

Why Dr. Bawumia Stands Out

Our endorsement is rooted in clear, compelling reasons that make Dr. Bawumia the best choice for the NPP and Ghana:

A proven Track record in Public Service

As Vice President, Dr. Bawumia spearheaded transformative policies such as the digitalisation drive (Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, Paperless Ports), which have enhanced efficiency and formalised Ghana’s economy.

His analytical, data-driven approach to governance ensures that policies are evidence-based and impactful, a critical need for Ghana’s next phase of development.

A Unifier & Grassroots Mobiliser

Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated an inclusive leadership style, engaging all factions of the party and fostering unity. He has proven this trait severally in his approach within the party.

His accessibility and humility resonate deeply with grassroots supporters, making him the ideal leader to galvanise the NPP’s base.

A Strong Electoral Asset

His appeal across demographics—youth, business community, and floating voters—gives the NPP the best chance in the 2028 elections.

His credibility and integrity position him as the candidate to restore and sustain public trust in the NPP’s governance.

Having campaigned accross the length and breadth of this country in the 2024 elections, his name is known by all, his image can be identified by all, his vision for Ghana is clear to all and that gives the NPP a competitive edge going into an election where our opponent must surely introduce a new candidate.

Just a the electoral history has shown over the years and backed by data, presenting Dr. Bawumia in the next elections starts the NPP with at least 41% of votes From the get go and surely that is a less risk than starting with a fresh candidate with zero known votes and hoping for the best.

Consolidation & Innovation

Dr. Bawumia represents the perfect blend of Consolidation (upholding the country’s best legacy of development) and innovation (introducing fresh ideas for a modern economy).

Our Pledge: Total Campaign Support

We, the former MMDCEs, are not just endorsing—we are activating our networks. We will:

Mobilise at the grassroots in all 16 regions, leveraging our deep-rooted connections.

Engage in door-to-door campaigns, articulating Dr. Bawumia’s vision.

Counter misinformation with facts about his achievements and potential.

Resource the campaign through fundraising and logistical support.

Conclusion: The NPP’s Best Bet for 2028

The stakes are high, and Ghana needs a leader with vision, competence, and electoral appeal. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia embodies these qualities, and we, the 220 former MMDCEs, are fully committed to ensuring his victory—first in the primaries, and ultimately in the 2028 general elections.

We call on all delegates, party faithful, and Ghanaians to rally behind Dr. Bawumia for a united, victorious, and progressive NPP.
