The Agortime Kente Festival (Agbamevor Za) 2025 was launched on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region. The colorful event marks the beginning of the annual celebration of Kente heritage, culture, and traditions of the Agortime people.

This year’s festival is themed “Woven Together: Kente, Agortime’s Creative Gift to the World.” The celebration aims to expose the fact that Kente originated from Agortime, patent every cloth woven from Agortime, and support the development of Kente weavers.

The launch was attended by the President of the Aflao Traditional Council, Togbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V, and Togbe Hezekiah I, along with people from different backgrounds, including the Muslims Council of Aflao and Apostle Prophet Jacob Henyo, the founder of The Voice Miracle Prayer Church International at Aflao.

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has announced plans to introduce a policy making Kente the official Friday wear for staff at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and Municipal District Assemblies across the region. This initiative aims to promote the region’s rich cultural heritage and support the local Kente weaving industry.

Dr. Dela Mawutor, a member of the Festival Central Planning Committee, applauded the government’s efforts and plans to fund the weavers. She emphasized the importance of completing the Kente Village project to support the weavers and promote the industry.

She revealed that Minister of Tourism Art and Culture has Hon. Dzifa Gomashie promised that the ministry will participate in the festival in August. Dr. Dela Mawutor expressed confidence that the planning committee will collaborate with the ministry to ensure the success of the festival.

According to Dr. Dela Mawutor, Kente originated from Agortime, and the Ashantis were taught by the Agortime people. The name “Kente” is believed to have come from the Ewe words “Ke-Te,” meaning “Open and Compact.”

Dr. Dela Mawutor appealed to the government to support the promotion and development of Kente and the weavers. She expressed confidence that the people of Agortime will collaborate with the government to achieve this goal.

The event will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Agortime people and promote national cohesion. The festival will feature vibrant cultural displays, including traditional war dances and performances of traditional rites.

Togbe Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V pledged that his reign will build cohesion and lineage between the two Traditional Areas and bind them together.

The main festival is scheduled to take place between August 10 to August 17, 2025, at Agortime.
