Bryan Acheampong Campaign Strategist Razak Kojo Opoku challenges Bawumias Rich Ideas claim

A senior member of the Bryan Acheampong for President 2028 campaign, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has publicly questioned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent statement that, despite not being wealthy, he brings “rich ideas” to Ghana’s political leadership.

In a sharply worded Facebook post, Dr. Opoku argued that visionary rhetoric must be matched by concrete, measurable results, particularly in areas such as employment and wealth creation.

“All rich ideas should point to jobs and wealth creation. Ideas that do not impact humanity are highly questionable,” he wrote.

Dr. Opoku’s remarks come in the wake of Dr. Bawumia’s strategic engagement with over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Accra. During the meeting, the Vice President positioned himself as a candidate for a political comeback, drawing parallels with former President John Mahama’s return to power in 2024.

The comments from the Bryan Acheampong campaign surrogate highlight growing internal competition within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where various camps are already mobilising support ahead of the 2028 presidential primaries. Dr. Acheampong, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, is widely seen as one of the rising contenders to lead the NPP into the next election cycle.

Dr. Opoku maintained that leadership should be assessed by the ability to implement and finance transformative ideas—not just crafting them.

“A rich man can lead just as a poor man can. However, ideas without financing are often useless on paper,” he concluded.

As the NPP prepares for a critical leadership transition following its defeat in the 2024 elections, internal debates like this are expected to intensify, with party stalwarts and emerging voices all vying for influence over the party’s future direction.
