NPP’s rushed flagbearer contest classless and crass — Franklin Cudjoe

Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its decision to organise an early flagbearer election ahead of the 2028 general elections, describing the move as “classless and crass.”

The NPP lost the 2024 presidential election by about 1.7 million votes to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Dramani Mahama.

As part of its reforms, the party’s National Executive Council announced on June 17 that it will hold its flagbearer election on January 31, 2026.

However, in a social media post on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Cudjoe questioned the party’s rush decision, asking why it is already focused on the next presidential race just months after what he called a “monumental beating.”

“Ah, has the 2028 elections been brought forward? Why is the NPP rabidly raucous about the presidency just a few months after their monumental beating?” he asked.

“Please, we need a serious, disciplined, innovative and forward-thinking opposition. What is going on is classless and crass.”

Mr. Cudjoe is calling for a more measured and strategic rebuilding process, insisting that the country deserves a credible opposition.

Meanwhile, names being speculated as likely contenders in the upcoming NPP flagbearer race include former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
