Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has officially declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
This comes after weeks of speculation and behind-the-scenes engagements.
Mr. Acheampong had earlier formed an exploratory committee following encouragement from party faithful and extensive consultations with family and close associates.
In a statement posted on his social media pages late Wednesday, May 28, he said the committee was tasked with assessing the alignment between his vision and the aspirations of the NPP and the broader Ghanaian populace.
Speaking to the media in Accra on Tuesday, June 24, after visiting the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Mr. Acheampong said the committee’s findings affirmed that his vision resonates with the expectations of both the party and the people.
“The report largely aligns with what I set out to do. There were a few areas I need to further align with the party, but the most important conclusion was that there is a need for a candidate who can galvanize the party,” he said.
He continued, “There’s also a need for a candidate who can inspire hope in the youth—someone whose vision can create jobs, strengthen national security, and revamp our country’s infrastructure.”
Mr. Acheampong added that before making a formal public announcement, he found it necessary to inform the leadership of the Presbyterian Church, of which he is a member.
“And so, with that said, the decision I’ve made is that I will contest when the party opens nominations. But as a product of the church, I felt it was important to first inform the General Council and the Moderator,” he noted.
At its National Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, the NPP announced January 31, 2026, as the date for electing a flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
Other names being speculated as possible contenders include former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
