In a fascinating interview with Captain Smart on the television show “Maakye,” Mr. Mike Kofi Afflu, the former president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation Ghana, shockingly revealed how thieves broke into the Auditor General’s office and took laptops after the department had uncovered a new corruption scandal involving Ofori-Atta transferring money into an unknown account. The embezzlement of Ken Ofori-Atta has been widely reported in Ghana, but that is only the start of the story.
Mr. Mike Kofi Afflu claims that after sending a file about Ken Ofori-Atta’s illegal money transfer to the Attorney General’s and EOCO’s offices, he was quickly summoned by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng to come help him. It’s obvious that the OSP office wants to know a lot of information about the funds that were sent out of the nation, including who approved them and what account they were deposited into. The Attorney General is currently investigating several corruption cases under the NPP government.
He informed Captain Smart that the police had been notified of the computer theft case, and they asserted that the event was the result of an order from above. Afflu claims that because the criminals think the computers contain corruption investigation evidence, they broke into his office to steal the laptops. However, “you don’t expect me to keep my evidence on a laptop” as a forensic investigator. He verified that he received two new computers from two well-known individuals after the PCs were stolen.
I find it incomprehensible that many Ghanaians, including the former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, would criticize Kissi Agyebeng for performing a task that Amidu was unable to perform rather than taking into account the financial crimes committed by Ken Ofori-Atta and offering ideas on how the money might be recovered. We don’t need to entertain this man, since he is not a finance minister but rather a professional crook, recruited by his relative Akufo Addo to facilitate corruption for the family.
The amount of money embezzled by the NPP from the COVID-19 funds and the International Monetary Fund surpasses the amount that Ghana received from the IMF. Many Ghanaians, especially NPP politicians, rebelled against Mahama after the new administration introduced a GHC 1.00 fuel tax to address the energy problem caused by the NPP embezzling GHC 70 billion from the energy sector. However, attempts to recover embezzled funds have encountered resistance. What’s happening?
Mr. Afflu claims that the Auditor General’s office found out that in October 2020, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta transferred an amount of GHC 52.5 billion, or $9.1 billion, intended for the Bank of Ghana to an unidentified account. He emphasized that the matter is particularly intriguing because the funds were moved just before the 2020 elections. Any knowledgeable Ghanaian should be able to see why Ken Ofori-Atta stole so much money from the state’s coffers.
No matter how rich a country is or the number of quantity resources the country has, it will never advance, and the youth will suffer poverty, if its citizens or politicians steal without consequence. America will not be a great nation if they put corrupt politicians in prison. Therefore, people should stop criticizing the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, and the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, if they are not going to assist the new administration in achieving its goals.
I would like to express my gratitude to Captain Smart and Mike Kofi Afflu for this crucial interview, which gave me a wealth of information to educate Ghanaians on other financial crimes committed by Ken Ofori-Atta that they may not be aware of. To make Ghana a great and powerful country, we must set politics and tribalism aside and unite in our battle against corruption.
