The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government will recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025 to boost the education sector.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the Minister assured lawmakers that adequate financial provisions have been made in the 2025 national budget to facilitate the mass recruitment drive.

“Mr. Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.

The announcement follows concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who called for an inquiry into reports of teachers allegedly being manhandled during a recent protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.

Minister Iddrisu addressed the issue by stating that he had already met with teacher representative Bafour Eric, who clarified that financial clearance for recruitment had been received in May. However, due to a delayed start in September, the clearance expired by December 31, and a new one is now required.

“They were expected to start work in August but began in September. Naturally, by December 31, the clearance had expired. They can only proceed with a renewed clearance, which I am currently awaiting,” he explained.

The Education Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving lingering posting issues and ensuring that new recruits are deployed effectively to improve learning outcomes nationwide.

According to the Minister, this large-scale recruitment effort is part of the government’s strategy to address teacher shortages, enhance support services, and fulfill broader goals in education reform and quality delivery across all levels in the country.
