The Keta Municipal Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has launched an urgent appeal for public support following severe flooding that has disrupted education in several communities within the Lawoshime enclave of the Keta Municipality in the Volta Region.

According to a statement signed by Wonder Setsoafia Deynu, the Municipal NADMO Director, which was made available to the GNA, the flooding has particularly endangered schoolchildren and teachers in the communities of Mamimi, Hagodzi, Sonugbe, and Hatorgodo, making the continuation of academic activities extremely unsafe and difficult.

According to assessments by the Ghana News Agency, about 200 individuals have been directly affected by the floods. This includes 155 boys, 68 girls, and 6 teachers. Children are now forced to wade through floodwaters to attend school, posing a serious threat to their safety and learning.

“The floods have turned ordinary school commutes into dangerous journeys. Pupils and teachers must now wade through water to access school facilities, putting their safety and education at great risk.” Deynu said.

The lack of basic protective gear, such as Wellington boots and life jackets, has compounded the situation, rendered teaching and learning impossible.

The NADMO Secretariat is therefore appealing to benevolent individuals, corporate bodies, NGOs, and philanthropic institutions to support materials such as wellington boots, life jackets (for both children and adults) and other relevant materials.

Deynu says the appeal emphasises that this support is not merely a gesture of goodwill, but a critical intervention to sustain the right to education in the aftermath of a disaster.

“Your support will go a long way in ensuring the safety of our children and teachers while also helping to sustain education amid this challenging time,” Deynu reiterated

This call broadens the humanitarian implications of the flooding crisis in the marshy and waterlogged areas in the Keta Municipal as children’s access to safe, quality education hangs in the balance.
