Parliament has by voice vote approved the nomination of seven Supreme Court nominees by President John Dramani Mahama.

The Appointments Committee recommended to the House by majority decision the adoption of its report and the approval of the nominees for appointment as Justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

The Justices were Justice Sanyo Dzamefe, Justice Sir Dennis Dominis Adjei, Justice Gbeil Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Adzua Bartels-Kodwo, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.

Presenting the report of the Committee on the floor of the House, the Chairman of the Committee Barnard Ahiafor noted that the Committee acting in accordance with the provision of Article 144 (2) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and Order 217 of the Standing Orders of Parliament, duly examined the seven nominees submitted by His Excellency the President for appointment to the Supreme Court.

He was of the view that upon careful deliberation, the Committee noted that all the nominees demonstrated outstanding competence, deep knowledge of the law and a firm grasp of judicial ethics.

According to the Chairman, they addressed questions posed by the Committee with professionalism, clarity and intellectual rigour, reflecting their capacity to uphold the independence, integrity and dignity of the highest court of the land.

“The Committee is satisfied that the nominees posses the requisite qualifications, judicial temperament and commitment to constitutional values expected of Justices of the Supreme Court” he stated.

The Chairman also made the House aware that all Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority were opposed to and voted against the nomination of all the Justices on the grounds that the appointment of seven new justices was inconsistent with the suspension of the Chief Justice, stating that it was not about filling vacancies but reshaping the constitutional order.
