National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, says the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana needs an urgent leadership overhaul.
According to him, the once competent election management body has now become an institution of incompetence under the leadership of Jean Mensa and her two deputies—Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, June 25, Asiedu Nketiah cited the lack of representation for SALL in the 8th Parliament and the disputed parliamentary election in Ablekuma as evidence of the EC’s failings.
“We are having a wrong election management body in place, and so that is a subject of reset in future. It means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose. The way it exists now, it is not fit for purpose, because with all the laws we have, you cannot still be having elections that end in stalemates.
“There is no anticipation of any stalemate in elections in any of our laws—unless people simply don’t want to do their work well. And so it’s a clear case of negligence or inability to perform its functions. That’s why the Electoral Commission needs to be reset,” he said.
Asiedu Nketiah added, “Since this commission, as presently constituted, took over the reins of the EC, they have never conducted an election that is satisfactory. There is overwhelming evidence that this commission is not fit for purpose.
“And if any serious country wants to maintain this type of electoral commission, then I don’t know what the country is about. There has to be a change in the EC leadership. There must be a change.”
