UCC Nyakrom Campus appeals for infrastructure support to increase student intake

The Director of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Nyakrom campus, Professor Isaac Buaben, has issued a heartfelt appeal to individuals, philanthropists, NGOs, and corporate bodies to support the institution with vital infrastructure, particularly hostels and lecture halls, to help accommodate a growing student population.

“I’m appealing to anyone across the globe to come and support UCC Nyakrom campus to provide enough hostel facilities for the student population which should have been higher than what we have presently,” he said.

Speaking to journalists during a media engagement in Agona Nyakrom on Monday, Professor Buaben revealed that the campus currently has 325 students pursuing BSc Nursing and BSc Nutrition, noting that the satellite campus is an extension of UCC’s main operations in Cape Coast.

“Currently, we have 325 students pursuing BSc Nursing and BSc Nutrition. It is an extension of what we are doing at the main campus at Cape Coast.”

He said while the demand for admissions continues to rise, the lack of adequate infrastructure remains a major constraint.

“We can admit more if we have the needed facilities. It is our hope that we would admit about 200 students in the next semester. UCC Nyakrom campus has been established to help people in Agona Nyakrom and surrounding areas.”

Professor Buaben further called on the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to come to the aid of the institution.

“I would like to appeal to individuals, philanthropists, NGOs to help us with hostel and lecture hall. UCC Nyakrom campus has come to stay,” he emphasised.

He also appealed to the Nyakrom Police Command to establish a police post on campus to strengthen safety and security for both staff and students.

Adding her voice, Madam Yvonne Berko, a lecturer at the School of Nursing at UCC Nyakrom campus, appealed to the Agona West Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Eric Gyamfi Odoom, to provide streetlights on the main road leading to the campus.

“Lack of streetlights is a serious concern. Students who have to study in the evening find it extremely difficult due to lack of bulbs. Even though we have not experienced an incident, the streetlights will boost the security situation,” she stressed.

The UCC Nyakrom campus continues to play a crucial role in expanding access to tertiary education in the Central Region, particularly for communities in and around Agona Nyakrom.
