Precious Dogbeda placed second in the 2025 Girls in ICT initiative
The top two winners of the just-ended Girls in ICT initiative in the Volta Region have received a cash donation of GH¢1,000 each from William Worfa Kpormatsi, a business tycoon and big gun of the Akatsi South NDC, a gesture aimed at supporting their educational journeys and encouraging excellence in technology among young girls.
The beneficiaries, Wosilatu Mohammed, who emerged as the overall winner, and Precious Dogbeda, who placed second, were among over 1,000 participants who competed in the government-sponsored Girls in ICT programme hosted at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho.
In particular, the story of 13-year-old Precious Dogbeda, a student of Wuxor M/A Basic School in Akatsi South Municipality, has drawn national attention. Despite her school lacking a single computer, she defied the odds to clinch the second position — a feat many have described as extraordinary.
Japhet Festus Gbede, the Assembly Member for Wuxor, Have, and Sremanu Electoral Area, took to his official Facebook page to commend the young girl for her resilience and academic brilliance. He also used the platform to acknowledge Hon. Kpormatsi’s donation and longstanding support for the Wuxor community.
“Precious has made all of us proud. Despite coming from a deprived background, she rose above the challenges. We are grateful to Hon. Kpormatsi for his generous donation and unwavering support for our youth,” Hon. Gbede wrote.
As part of the prize for her performance, Precious’s school is set to receive a fully equipped ICT lab. Hon. Gbede has pledged to ensure that the facility, when completed, will be named in her honour, as a lasting legacy of her achievement and inspiration to other students.
This is not the first time Kpormatsi has invested in education within the Akatsi South Municipality. He is widely recognised for sponsoring students from underprivileged communities, particularly from Wuxor, to attend Akatsi Senior High School.
The donation has been widely applauded by residents and education stakeholders who see it as a powerful motivation for young girls to pursue careers in science and technology.
