Gov’t committed to helping MSMEs grow to become giants in Africa and beyond — GEA CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Margareth Ansei, says the government is committed to scaling up Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Ghana to become major economic players across Africa and beyond.

She said the John Dramani Mahama-led administration is putting in place measures to ensure local businesses receive the necessary support to expand and thrive globally.

Speaking at the national MSMEs Day celebration in Accra on Friday, June 27, Madam Ansei likened the MSME sector to a malnourished child in need of proper nutrition to grow.

“MSME is like a child who is malnourished. It has the capability to grow but lacks the vitamins that will make the child grow,” she explained.

“We must help them to grow and make them big. We are here to support our individual businesses—micro, small, and medium—to become giants in Africa and even beyond the continent.”

She cited data showing that MSMEs provide about 80% of employment in Ghana and represent roughly 90% of all businesses, significantly contributing to the country’s GDP.

“It must have a presence and a voice,” she stressed.

The GEA boss also backed calls for a new legal framework tailored to the realities of MSMEs, arguing that it is unfair to subject small enterprises to the same regulatory conditions as larger corporations.

“Businesses like someone processing fruit juice cannot have the same laws as the big ones. These are some of the challenges. Most of our businesses are not even able to comply with the existing laws,” she stated.
