Why Ghana’s EC Needs a Total Overhaul

A Call for Electoral Reform: Why Ghanas EC Needs a Total Overhaul

The integrity of our electoral process is the bedrock of Ghana’s democracy. When confidence in the Electoral Commission (EC) wavers, the very foundation of our governance is at risk. It is with this profound conviction that I, Prince Henry Koforidua, a member of the NDC Government Communications Team, wholeheartedly agree with Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s assertion that the Electoral Commission board requires a complete overhaul.

The current leadership of the EC has, regrettably, failed to inspire the necessary confidence in the electoral process. This lack of credibility is deeply troubling and undermines the public’s trust in the fairness and transparency of our elections. For a democracy to thrive, its citizens must believe that their votes matter and that the institutions overseeing the electoral process are impartial and dedicated to upholding the will of the people. Sadly, this belief has been eroded.

A robust, transparent, and impartial EC is not a luxury; it is a fundamental necessity for free, fair, and credible elections. Without it, the risk of electoral disputes and social unrest escalates, threatening the peace and stability we all cherish.

I firmly believe that a reset in the EC’s leadership is long overdue. This isn’t merely about changing faces; it’s about fundamentally reforming the institution to ensure it is truly fit for purpose. By bringing in new leadership and implementing comprehensive reforms, we can restore public trust and strengthen our democratic framework.

I stand in solidarity with Hon. Nketia in this critical call for meaningful change. It is time for the Electoral Commission to become an institution that genuinely serves all Ghanaians, fostering an environment where every vote counts and every election reflects the true voice of the people. Our democracy deserves nothing less.
