Lawyers withdraw services today in observance of Martyrs’ Day

The Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has officially granted approval for members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to refrain from appearing in court on Monday, June 30, 2025, as part of activities marking this year’s Martyrs’ Day.

In a circular dated Tuesday, June 17, 2025, addressed to judges and magistrates nationwide, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized that the directive aligns with a longstanding tradition that allows legal professionals to fully participate in commemorative events honouring slain judges.

“In conformity with tradition, approval has been granted for members of the Ghana Bar Association to withdraw their services from court appearances on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the directive noted.

Martyrs’ Day is observed annually to pay tribute to three High Court judges, Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong, as well as retired Army officer Major Sam Acquah, who were abducted and murdered on June 30, 1982. The killings shocked the nation and remain one of the most tragic events in Ghana’s legal and political history.

The circular was also copied to the Acting Judicial Secretary, Court Manager of the Law Court Complex, Supervising High Court Judges, and all Registrars to ensure compliance with the directive and proper coordination on the day.

This year’s observance is expected to draw dignitaries from across the judiciary and legal fraternity, reaffirming the country’s commitment to justice, accountability, and remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price in service to the rule of law.
