The National Identification Authority (NIA) has committed to clearing all outstanding arrears owed to its staff between January and June 2025, with payments set to begin in July.
This assurance comes in the wake of a return to work by staff who had staged an indefinite strike over the delayed payment of their Operational Support Allowance—a key benefit linked to the Authority’s operations.
Speaking to Citi News, Dorah Badu Acheampong, Head of Media Relations at the NIA, reaffirmed the management’s pledge to settle all arrears within the next two months.
“The arrears from January to June will be paid in July. But as was in the statement, in July and August the staff should expect the arrears to be paid,” she stated.
The industrial action, which had brought the NIA’s services to a halt, was called off following a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) on Friday, June 27. The Commission ruled the strike unlawful, stating that divisional unions do not have the authority to independently declare such an action.
Subsequent meetings between the NIA, the Ministry of Finance, and the NLC led to a resolution, prompting the staff to resume duties on June 30. The return to work has restored full operations at all NIA service centres nationwide.
The NIA’s latest assurance comes as a relief to both staff and citizens who rely on its services for national identification and other essential documentation. With the arrears issue now on track for resolution, attention turns to ensuring that similar disruptions are avoided in the future.
