A former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Subin Constituency, Joseph Boakye Danquah, has fully backed the ruling NDC government’s move to salvage the energy sector via an amended Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA) 2025 popularly called D-Levy.

Sharing his thoughts on the ongoing efforts by government to raise revenue to settle energy sector debt and most importantly generate power for the country, he noted that the controversial D-Levy fits perfectly in governments plans.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb in June 2025, JB Danquah declared his full backing for the rollout of the D-Levy which has since been suspended due to fierce resistance from a section of the public.

“My understanding of the system is that the tariff setting for electricity bill require that they set aside a component which is very vital for fuel to power the generators to give us the power we need. We did not factor that in the pricing of electricity. How terrible is that? Who is supposed to pay that?

“Government, right? How is government going to get the money from? Tax us. So, if we don’t want the D-Levy …if I were the president, I will put D-Levy aside and increase electricity tariffs,” he said.

Meanwhile, an earlier announcement by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to increase electricity tariffs by 2.45% takes effect today July 1, 2025.
