EC moves closer to rerun of Ablekuma North parliamentary poll

The Electoral Commission (EC) is inching closer to organising a rerun of the disputed Ablekuma North parliamentary election in the Greater Accra Region, following a string of intense stakeholder engagements and behind-the-scenes consultations with Parliament.

Sources familiar with the matter say the Commission has, over the past two weeks, been briefing the House and holding a series of high-level discussions with political parties, civil society, and security agencies regarding the path forward for the constituency, where the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary race remains mired in controversy.

Today, the EC convened what is believed to be a decisive meeting with representatives of the major political parties, national security officials, and regional electoral officers to assess the feasibility of a rerun and possibly settle on a new timeline for the poll.

Although no official confirmation has been issued, multiple insiders say preparations for a rerun have reached an advanced stage.

The Ablekuma North constituency has remained without a sworn Member of Parliament following unresolved disputes surrounding the outcome of the December 2024 general elections. Allegations of vote irregularities, tampering, and disruptions at several polling stations led to a legal challenge, prompting the EC to suspend certification of the result pending investigations and consultations.
