A calculated smear campaign against Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, appears to have collapsed under the weight of facts and impending legal action, as the outspoken academic fights back against what he describes as a “grand scheme” to silence him for his critical views on governance.
In a public statement on Tuesday July 1, Prof Gyampo refuted a string of damaging allegations aired on certain radio platforms and social media, insisting they are entirely baseless and politically motivated.
“My attention has been drawn to some allegations made against me on some radio stations and on social media,” he wrote. “I wish to thank all my admirers, well-wishers, and teaming supporters all over the world on social media for calling on me to ignore and not to respond. But unfortunately, lies become truth in the psyche of many people when they aren’t corrected. So, I plead that I am allowed to respond.”
The allegations, he revealed, include claims that he personally recruited 28 women and two men at his workplace—a claim he flatly rejected.
“I have not recruited 28 women and two men as being alleged. I am not in charge of recruitment at my workplace. Recruitment over the years, I am told, has been done professionally by a private outsourced agency that follows a rigorous selection process,” he stated.
Responding to another claim that he frequently travels at the expense of the state, Prof Gyampo disclosed that out of over 38 travel opportunities available to him, he had honoured only four, all with official clearance.
“Part of my work requires that I travel and out of the over 38 opportunities, I have only honored 4 and these were with the expressed approval and permission from the Chief of Staff. Anyone can check for the evidence.”
Prof Gyampo also dismissed reports that he flies first or business class, stating: “I have never travelled on First Class or Business class. I remain the only CEO in Ghana who travels on ECONOMY TICKET. Again, the evidence of my boarding passes for all four trips are there.”
The high-profile academic and governance expert has handed the matter over to his legal team, signalling readiness for a court showdown.
“My lawyers and other lawyers I don’t even know, have taken over the matter and would deal with the individuals behind the baseless allegations this week,” he confirmed.
Prof Gyampo, known for his fearless commentary on national issues, assured the public that he would not be cowed into silence.
“I assure all that I know the public confidence in me and I won’t do anything to betray the trust reposed in me. All must also be assured that baseless allegations have never been enough to silence me. I would remain myself and would always speak my mind on every national issue while focusing on my core job of championing the interest of shippers forcefully and proactively,” he stressed.
The fallout from the attempted character assassination has not only bolstered public support for Prof Gyampo but has also raised questions about the motives and credibility of those behind the false accusations. With legal action now imminent, attention turns to the courts where the truth is expected to prevail.
