Former MP for Subin and NPP General Secretary hopeful, Eugene Boakye Antwi
Former Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has expressed concerns over the suspension and the process leading to the removal of the Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to him, the suspended Chief Justice is a victim of a political vendetta.
He stated that if the government indeed has evidence to support its claims against her, it must present the evidence and allow her the opportunity to respond.
Eugene Boakye Antwi emphasized that the Chief Justice should not be targeted simply because she was appointed by the previous regime, as such actions would pose a serious threat to the integrity of the judiciary and the nation-building process.
“She was calling for a televised hearing. If you say there’s been a breach, then you must also allow her to respond, because we don’t know what is going on behind closed doors. Her phones are being seized, her spouse is being prevented from entering the room, and we are hearing all sorts of disturbing reports.
That’s why we say, if she has truly committed a crime, no one will support her. But if she hasn’t, and is being harassed by the state or targeted by individuals sending dubious petitions against her, then we must all be concerned about the future of our judiciary. We shouldn’t allow someone to be targeted merely because they were appointed by a previous administration,” he explained.
He also cited former Chief Justices who remained in office after a change in government, and questioned what has changed under the current regime.
“So what has changed? Those who have a vendetta against this woman should search their conscience. If they truly believe she has committed a crime, no one will defend her. I believe all the allegations against her have been addressed, and she has proven that the accusations being circulated are not true,” he said.
