Political science analyst and New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has described former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the natural successor to President John Dramani Mahama.
He said party members and many Ghanaians see Dr. Bawumia as the heir apparent, with the right qualities and experience to lead the country after the current administration.
Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day on Wednesday, July 2, Dr. Zaato also cited political trends to suggest that Dr. Bawumia stands a high chance of succeeding President Mahama, just as past presidents have handed over to former opponents.
“They see him as the heir apparent to President Mahama. And they have confidence in his leadership. That confidence is being shown in both internal and national polls,” Dr. Zaato said.
“Almost every president handed over or, let me say, 90% of the presidents handed over — to the people they defeated,” he observed.
He explained that the 2024 NPP flagbearer continues to command strong support among party faithful and the general public due to his intelligence, humility, and policy-driven leadership.
“NPP members see His Excellency Dr. Bawumia as the most experienced, the most intelligent, and the unifier. They believe he has what it takes to unite the party and take the fight to the NDC,” he added.
