The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced a rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections in selected polling stations of the constituency.
The rerun of the elections is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, in 19 polling stations, following several months without parliamentary representation in the constituency due to an impasse that prevented the declaration of a winner in the 2024 general elections.
According to a press statement by the Electoral Commission (EC) dated Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the decision was necessitated by the fact that the results from the 19 polling stations used for the collation had not been verified by the respective Presiding Officers.
“After extensive deliberations, the Commission informed the Political Parties that it would proceed to rerun the election in 19 out of the 37 Polling Stations.
“The Commission arrived at the decision to rerun the election in the underlisted Polling Stations because, the 19 scanned Polling Station results used for the collation, though approved by Agents of both Political Parties, were not verified by the Presiding Officers responsible for those Polling Stations. The Election will be held on Friday, 11th July, 2025,” portions of the statement read.
The EC further explained that initial calls for a rerun of parliamentary elections in all 37 polling stations had to be abandoned, as the Commission managed to obtain verification and confirmation from the Presiding Officers for 18 of the scanned polling station results.
“It is instructive to note that, the Commission was able to secure the Presiding Officers’ verification and confirmation for 18 scanned Polling Station results-Agents of both parties also approved same. A rerun will therefore not be held in those Polling Stations,” it explained.
The Commission has therefore called for police security and protection during the rerun.
The EC’s decision comes several months after an attempt to re-collate results and declare a winner was marred by violence.
The Ablekuma North parliamentary seat is being contested by Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
