Ablekuma North to get Member of Parliament on July 11 as EC announces 19 polling stations re-run

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a re-run of parliamentary elections in 19 out of 37 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency, which remains without a Member of Parliament following the 2024 general elections.

The re-election is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, and follows a resolution reached at a meeting between officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, July 1.

In a statement dated July 2, the EC explained that the NDC insisted the entire 37 polling stations be re-run, while the NPP believed the results from the three remaining polling stations should be collated and a winner declared.

“It is important for the public to understand that the issue in contention has to do with the fact that 37 pink sheets provided by the NPP and used to collate the results were scanned copies,” the EC stated.

The Commission recalled that political party supporters had stormed the collation centre during the December 7 election, destroying several pink sheets related to the parliamentary contest.

“After extensive deliberations, the Commission informed the political parties that it would proceed to re-run the election in 19 out of the 37 polling stations. The Commission arrived at this decision because the 19 scanned polling station results, though approved by agents of both political parties, were not verified by the presiding officers responsible for those polling stations,” the statement added.

The outcome of the re-run is expected to finally settle the parliamentary race in Ablekuma North between Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the NPP and the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn.
