Communication Ministry engages MTN Ghana to resolve data challenges

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has assured the public of its continued engagement with MTN Ghana to address technical challenges that have hindered the implementation of reduced data prices.

The discussions focused on ongoing issues affecting MTN’s charging and subscription services, which have delayed the launch of new and more affordable data bundles, including the much-anticipated 399 bundle.

This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting convened by the sector Minister, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, with a team from MTN Ghana led by the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Ms Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe.

The Minister emphasised the importance of proactive communication to mitigate public backlash, noting his active presence on social media to keep citizens informed about the situation and ongoing rectification efforts.

Mr George stressed the urgency of resolving these issues swiftly, aiming for systems to be fully operational and accepting new subscriptions by the end of the day.

Ms. Afriyie Wiafe revealed that three critical MTN services experienced a crash upon going live, despite successfully passing all User Acceptance Testing (UAT) in the test environment.

She confirmed that the incident was a systemic failure, not a security breach, impacting customers’ ability to purchase new bundles.

“Some subscribers were unable to complete transactions, while others received confusing error messages. This technical anomaly notably affected access to the ‘399 bundle,’ aimed at heavy data users, content creators, and students,” she stated.

The MTN team said work is ongoing to restore full functionality, emphasising that all three affected services are now reported to be back online, with efforts currently focused on configuring the system and redoing data balances.
