NPP kicks against EC’s proposed rerun in Ablekuma North

The Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency has been fiercely contested by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has described the move as unwarranted and lacking consensus.

NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed, speaking on Citi Eyewitness News following the EC’s July 2 press release, asserted that there was no agreement with the EC, despite the party’s representatives being present at the meeting.

He stated, “That is very evident in the release of the EC itself—that the political parties did not agree.”

According to the EC, the reason for the rerun in 19 of the 37 polling stations is that the presiding officers failed to verify the scanned Pink Sheets used for collation. Additionally, the original Pink Sheets were destroyed when party supporters overran the collation center.

However, the NPP insists that the outstanding results—particularly from three polling stations—are sufficient to complete the collation and declare a winner.

“We don’t know what the EC is up to. The NPP is not going to give up on this particular fight,” Mohammed said.

He continued, “We don’t know of any elections. The EC must conclude the collation from the three polling stations—this is still outstanding, and that is clear for us,” CitiNewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

The NPP also argued that instead of organizing fresh polls in stations where party agents had already certified the results, the EC should focus on securing the collation process.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong is expected to address the public and outline the party’s official position at a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the EC has assured the public that the rerun—scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025—will be transparent and peaceful, with security provided by the Ghana Police Service.
