Galamsey: Only 8% of small scale miners are licensed – Association reveals

The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners has disclosed that a mere 8 out of 100 miners possess proper documentation for their mining activities.

According to the association, approximately 90 percent of individuals engaging in small-scale mining operate without licenses in various parts of the country.

The General Secretary of the Association, Michael Adugyamfi, attributed this problem to a bureaucratic licensing regime.

Speaking on the Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s afternoon political show “Dwabrem” on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 hosted by Prince Nii Ardey aka Dr Cash, Adugyamfi also cited political interference as a contributing factor to the issue.

He emphasized that the situation has driven dozens of miners to engage in illicit mining, resulting in the destruction of the environment.

Adugyamfi called on the government to implement a more robust system that would regulate all miners, ensuring they not only acquire licenses but also engage in responsible mining practices.
