The Minister of Health, Kwaena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that six regions in Ghana still lack regional hospitals, a gap the government is working urgently to address.

Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio, monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, July 4, 2025, the minister also revealed a major policy shift in medical education.

According to him, the government, through the Ministry of Health, is introducing a policy that will allow experienced physician assistants and nurses who have served for a number of years to pursue medical education and qualify as doctors.

“We are about to implement new policies. Previously, a trained physician assistant or nurse could never train to become a doctor. But that is going to change,” he noted.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to expand healthcare access and improve medical service delivery, particularly in regions without regional hospitals.
