Residents of Bronkon New Life in the Afigya Kwabre South District have appealed to the government to fix a dilapidated wooden footbridge in their community as it poses a serious risk to commuters.

According to a recent report by OTEC news, “the weak footbridge has become a death trap for the residents, especially the sick and pregnant women who use the bridge to attend to a nearby health facility”.

Residents say they rely on a makeshift wooden bridge to cross the Owabi River and it becomes inaccessible whenever it rains.

Out of fear, residents are forced to remove the wooden planks whenever it is about to rain, for fear of being washed away when the river floods.

“When it rains, there’s no way one can cross to the other end. We have to wait until the water recedes which can take hours or even a day,” one resident lamented.

“Flooding is another major concern as the area becomes waterlogged during the rains on several occasions, making residents living on the banks relocate,”another resident named Ama Atta bemoaned.

The residents are therefore calling on the Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly to construct a permanent footbridge that can withstand heavy rains and ensure the safety of residents who rely on it.
