Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, lamenting how relentless legal challenges overshadowed and ultimately diminished what could have been a promising parliamentary career.
Awuku spoke candidly about the emotional and psychological toll that the constant courtroom battles had on the young lawmaker.
“I can tell you for a fact that the gentleman was just stressed,” Awuku said. “Today, it is the High Court undermining his victory, and pulling him to the High Court. The next day, they are pulling him to the Supreme Court. My brother did not even enjoy the benefit of serving his people with a clean conscience and a clear mind.”
He continued: “He never had the benefit of concentrating on his people. Every day, he was being dragged to court. It was very draining for him, and I quite remember one time he said to me; Commander, I am tired.”
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, July 7, Awuku revealed that the late MP had envisioned launching a foundation to support the people of Akwatia, but repeated litigation made it impossible to roll out his plans. Despite his intentions, Kumi spent the bulk of his brief tenure embroiled in legal disputes that drained his energy and stole focus from his constituents.
His passing has left a deep void in Parliament and within the NPP, where many remember him as a resilient and passionate public servant whose potential was never fully realized due to unrelenting legal attacks.
