There was a news report on GhanaWeb on July 7, 2025, published under the headline: “Dr. Bawumia is the best economist to turn Ghana’s economy around – Boakye-Danquah.”

The report stated that former government spokesperson on governance and security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, had lauded former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as Ghana’s most capable economist and the right man to lead the nation on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the report, Boakye-Danquah described Dr. Bawumia as “the best economist that Ghana would have, that Ghana has had, and the future of Ghana.”

He was also alleged to have commended both the media and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as their admiration for Dr Bawumia, adding that it reflects the NPP flagbearer’s credibility.

“I see that the media houses and even the NDC have a lot of admiration for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party. And I’m glad,” he reportedly said.

Boakye-Danquah was further reported to have argued that President John Dramani Mahama falls short when it comes to economic leadership.

“If we need to put proper economic knowledge and a sound economic value system in place, H.E. John Dramani Mahama comes nowhere close. That’s the truth. He comes nowhere close.

“So, I’m glad that you would want to replay some of the statements that Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made. It’s a clear indication for us as a political party that Dr. Bawumia is the right person to lead this country and turn around its economic fortunes,” he stated.

However, in a rejoinder, Boakye-Danquah has clarified that the said interview is from the 2024 election period and does not reflect his current position.

He emphasised that he has now thrown his support behind former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, as the NPP’s candidate for the 2028 elections.

Below is his full statement:

“In the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, I campaigned vigorously for Dr. Bawumia (@MBawumia), highlighting his economic expertise as key to transforming Ghana’s fortunes. However, the election results favored John Mahama, reflecting the Ghanaian people’s preference for leadership grounded in practical experience over theoretical economics.

I have now shifted my unwavering support to Ken Ohene Agyapong (@realKenAgyapong) as the ideal candidate to lead the NPP forward, based on my observations and the sentiments of Ghanaians.

While the Bawumia team continues to reshare my 2024 campaign materials, a move I believe is misguided, I’m flattered they recognize my strength as a communicator.

Going forward, I am fully committed to promoting Ken Ohene Agyapong as the next leader of the NPP, confident in his ability to resonate with the people of Ghana and steer the party to success.
