Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

In a post social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter on Monday, July 7, the 2024 Flagbearer of the NPP described the late lawmaker as a faithful politician to the course of the party.

“I have received with sadness the passing of Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, MP Akwatia Constituency. Ernest was a loyal patriot. My condolences to the immediate family. May his soul rest in peace, Dr Bawumia wrote.

Meanwhile, a brother of the late MP, has recounted the heartbreaking events leading to the sudden death of the young legislator, describing him as a “pillar in the family” whose passing has left the entire family devastated.

According to him, Ernest had travelled and returned early this morning, but soon after began complaining of severe heart pains.

“He came this morning and complained of pains in his heart. We rushed him to the hospital, and he was given a drip, but he was unresponsive. Later, his wife was informed that he had passed,” he told journalists on Monday, July 7, 2025.

He revealed that about two weeks ago, Ernest had planned to visit Akwatia but couldn’t make the trip, asking someone to represent him instead.

“Two weeks ago, he was supposed to come to Akwatia, but he couldn’t make it, so he asked someone to come in his stead, so, it’s been a while since he came over,” he added.

The grieving brother described Ernest Kumi as more than just a politician, he was the strength of their family.

“Indeed, we have lost a gem. He was a pillar in the family. As a family, we are devastated by the loss,” he said.

The late MP, affectionately known as the “Akwatia Star Boy,” passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Ernest Yaw Kumi was a first-time MP for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and had recently been in the news due to legal challenges surrounding his election victory.
