The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling on the international and diplomatic community to intervene in what it describes as a flagrant abuse of electoral authority by the Electoral Commission (EC) following its decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
The EC has scheduled the rerun for Friday, July 11, 2025, citing discrepancies in pink sheet verification. But the NPP is rejecting the move outright, branding it as legally flawed and politically motivated. The party has declared that it will boycott the planned rerun.
Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, July 8, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, urged the diplomatic corps, civil society, and the media to speak out against what he called an unlawful interference in the democratic process.
“An election that has been conducted and won cannot be redone simply because someone claims victory through threats. We want the international and diplomatic community to understand what is happening,” he said.
“The media must shine a light on this and ensure the right thing is done. We cannot support illegality or injustice,” he added.
His remarks came as tensions mount over the EC’s decision, which the NPP argues disregards legal processes and undermines electoral credibility.
Earlier that day, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong doubled down on the party’s position, affirming that the NPP will not recognize or participate in the rerun. He insisted their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had already secured victory in the December 2024 polls with a lead of 414 votes.
“The NPP is firm in its stance. Our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the election based on facts and figures. During our National Executive Committee meeting, we agreed that under no circumstances will we participate in a rerun,” he stated at a press briefing.
Kodua further accused the EC of attempting to override the will of the people and called on the Commission to heed the court’s directive by finalizing the collation and formally declaring Afriyie as the elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.
The controversy has intensified political tensions just months after a hotly contested general election, with the NPP framing the rerun as not only a procedural error but a direct threat to democratic integrity.
