The Kasoa-Ofaakor Circuit Court has handed a 25-year jail sentence with hard labour to Mohammed Bello, a member of a violent highway robbery gang, for his role in a brutal attack along the Dabanyin stretch of the Winneba Highway.
The brazen robbery unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, July 6, 2025, when Bello and four accomplices ambushed a Toyota Hiace minibus near Gomoa Buduatta Junction, opening fire on passengers and leaving four people injured. The gang made off with cash, mobile phones, and other valuables.
Bello was swiftly captured by officers from the Gomoa East District Police Command as he attempted to flee the scene. He was later transferred to the Central East Regional Police Command, where he was charged, tried, and convicted.
A police statement confirmed the sentencing and assured the public that a manhunt is ongoing for the remaining fugitives. “We assure the public of our continued commitment to safety and law enforcement,” it said.
Inside the Attack
According to police, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. when the gang forced the minibus to stop before robbing passengers and drivers at gunpoint. The chaos left multiple victims wounded.
Items recovered from Bello upon arrest include GH₵3,740 in cash, two Samsung smartphones, a Tecno Spark 20, an Itel keypad phone, a power bank, a lady’s purse, five sticks of cigarettes, a wristwatch, a headset, a phone charger, and a pair of sandals later identified by one of the victims.
All four injured victims were treated at a hospital and have since praised the police for their rapid response and capture of the suspect.
Authorities are calling on other victims of the robbery to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
The Ghana Police Service says it is intensifying efforts to bring the remaining four accomplices to justice and has reiterated its commitment to making the country’s highways safer for travelers.
