Scenes from Ernest Kumi’s home when Parliament’s leaders visited his family to commiserate with them
The leadership of the Parliament of Ghana, led by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, on Tuesday, July 9, 2025, visited the family of the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, to commiserate with them.
The atmosphere at the home of the late Akwatia legislator was filled with heavy grief, with family members of the deceased and his colleague MPs still in disbelief over his sudden demise.
Visuals of the visit show the MPs and family relations of the late MP with their faces drawn in pain and tear-streaked.
Some of them could no longer hold back their tears when former District Chief Executive (DCE) of Akwatia and brother of the late Ernest Kumi, Seth Birikorang Ofosu, started recounting the events leading to his sudden demise.
They could be seen wiping tears on their faces as the former DCE was giving an account of the event.
Birikorang Ofosu said that he spent the entire weekend with the late Akwatia legislator.
He said after travelling outside Accra for various engagements, they returned to Accra on the evening of Sunday, July 6, 2025, and planned an engagement for 2:00 pm on Monday, July 7, 2025.
He said that on Monday morning, Kumi’s wife (Mavis) called him to tell him that his brother needed him and that he was at the hospital.
“When I got to the hospital, his wife and his mother were sitting beside the bed he was lying on. The doctor was also there. I pulled his leg and said, ‘You said we have a meeting at 2:00 pm, and you have come to lie here,’” the former DCE said.
He said that it was at that moment he was informed that Ernest Kumi, the person he was with hours ago, was dead.
Among the leaders were Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, Deputy Majority Leader George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, the Chief Whips of both the Majority and Minority sides of the House, the Clerks of Parliament, as well as a number of legislators.
