There’s no evidence to suggest NDC supporters engaged in criminality — Ex-NDC MP

Kojo Adu Asare, a former Member of Parliament for Adentan on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pushed back on claims that party members engaged in criminal activities during the 2024 general elections.

The News Editor of The Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, had alleged on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily show on Thursday that NDC supporters caused violence after the elections, particularly during parliamentary collation exercises.

But in a rebuttal on the same programme, Mr. Adu Asare said such comments should be avoided unless there is evidence to back them.

“To impugn criminality to the NDC is something I won’t take lightly at all because there is no evidence that any NDC member was involved in such acts. It’s a very serious allegation to make.

“If you have evidence, present it to the police. As a senior journalist of your standing, your words carry weight. So if you have that evidence, present it and let the culprits be pursued so justice is served,” he told Mr. Darko.

The journalist had also alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC) is being manipulated by the NDC government in its decision to re-run some polling stations on Friday, July 11.

But according to Adu Asare, such claims are unfounded because the government has no role in the EC’s decisions.

He noted that the current EC officials were even appointed under the previous NPP government.

“To try to rope in government — in what sense? How does government come into this? This is the EC, the court, the NDC as a party, and the NPP as a party. So who is remote-controlling anyone here? And by the way, who appointed the current EC heads?” he quizzed.
