The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate in Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, says she remains confident of victory in the re-run of 19 polling stations scheduled for Friday, July 11.
Although the NPP has directed its members to boycott the re-run, Akua Afriyie, who claims to have won the original election, has insisted on contesting to secure the seat.
She accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of making a sudden U-turn from its earlier position of three outstanding polling stations to now claiming 19 polling stations.
“I want to put on record that darkness can never cover light. I am the light. I am the truth and the light. I walk with the gracious God. You can never cheat me, and the Lord is going to speak tomorrow as I contest,” she told the media on Thursday, July 10.
She added, “I want everybody in Ablekuma North to hear me and hear my voice. I am contesting this election, and I am coming out victorious because I won that election, and God will ensure that justice prevails.”
Akua Afriyie also provided figures from the initial election, claiming she won with 34,613 votes against her opponent’s 34,199.
She said results were collated from 278 polling stations, leaving three unresolved before the EC’s change of position.
“Those 278 polling stations, I am leading with 349 votes. We were left with three polling stations. Then overnight, the EC came back saying we have to re-run 19 polling stations. We don’t know what happened,” she said.
Meanwhile, the NPP’s legal challenge against the EC’s decision was dismissed by an Accra High Court on Wednesday, July 9, with Justice Ali Baba Abature describing the application as “unmeritorious.”
