The government of Ghana has expressed profound sorrow over the devastating floods that struck Central Texas on Friday, July 4, 2025, killing more than 100 people and displacing thousands.

In a formal condolence message signed by President John Mahama and addressed to US President Donald J. Trump, Ghana extended its sympathies to the bereaved families and affected communities.

The floods, triggered by torrential rains, caused the Guadalupe River to swell rapidly, particularly impacting Kerr County, where the highest number of fatalities occurred.

Among the victims were over two dozen children at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. Other severely affected counties included Travis, Hays, Williamson, Kendall, Burnet, and Tom Green.

In the message, Ghana’s government stated: “Reports reaching us indicate that the disaster has claimed the lives of at least eighty (80) individuals, including children, displaced thousands, and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The communities of Travis, Hays, and Williamson appear to have been among the hardest hit.”

The letter praised the efforts of emergency responders, noting: “We commend your resolute leadership and the tireless efforts of emergency personnel, local authorities, and volunteers who are working under extremely difficult circumstances to rescue, relieve, and restore affected communities.”

Ghana affirmed its solidarity with the US during this period of national mourning, adding: “Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

The floods, described as one of the deadliest in Texas history, have left rescue teams searching for missing persons while authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
