Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has urged the party to reconsider its decision to boycott the upcoming Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
He warned that retreating at such a critical moment would damage the party’s credibility, demoralise its grassroots supporters, and set a bad precedent for future elections.
“To the National Executives, I respectfully urge a reconsideration of the decision to boycott. We must not retreat in the face of political pressure. We must remember what is at stake: the balance of parliamentary power, the morale of our grassroots, and the credibility of our party’s commitment to the democratic process,” Mr Agyapong said in a social media post on Thursday, July 10.
He further asked, “If we abandon this contest today, what precedent do we set for tomorrow? What shall we say when other critical seats are contested? How shall we answer future generations who ask whether we stood firm when the republic called?”
This comes on the back of the party’s National Executive Council decision to boycott the polls despite Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP candidate, contesting in the rerun of 19 polling stations.
The leadership insists Akua Afriyie won the December 7 elections by over 400 votes against the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn.
The former lawmaker urged the Electoral Commission to ensure that the rerun be conducted freely and fairly to ensure peace and acceptance by all parties involved.
“If the people choose the NDC, so be it. If they choose the NPP, we will rejoice. But let it be through a process that is free, fair, and fiercely contested,” he wrote.
